About Cunningham Intermediate Modern Dance Technique

Cunningham Intermediate Modern Dance Technique is a dance technique developed by the legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham. It is a highly sophisticated and demanding movement vocabulary that emphasizes the use of the whole body, with particular focus on the articulation of the spine, the limbs, and the joints. The technique is characterized by its fluidity, precision, and economy of movement, as well as its emphasis on the use of space, time, and energy. Cunningham Intermediate Modern Dance Technique has been highly influential in the development of modern and contemporary dance, and continues to be taught and practiced by dancers and choreographers around the world.

I really enjoyed learning Cunningham technique from Sumi. It felt very right for my body and I love how most of the exercises are done in parallel as well as turned out. The shifting of weight was a little bit of a challenge but I like the flow of each movement. It was especially interesting to me that wherever you are facing at the time is considered the front. Every step felt direct and purposeful. – Hunter
